Building a sustainable, global energy system based on renewable energies requires a system for coupling all sectors of energy consumption. Green hydrogen, which is produced in a climate-neutral manner from renewable electricity, is a versatile energy source and ideal for this purpose. For the practical implementation of a functioning energy economy based on green hydrogen, a needs-based hydrogen storage and transport system in the form of pipelines is necessary. Such pipelines are now made exclusively from steel materials and have to be cost-intensively oversized depending on the operating mode and pressure, since steel tends to change its mechanical properties when it comes into contact with hydrogen (hydrogen embrittlement). Alternatively, pipelines can be made from fiber-thermoplastic composites. Although these are resistant to hydrogen, they are complex to produce due to the currently available production methods. This means that a significant cost advantage over steel pipelines is currently not possible.
